Many individuals in the United States struggle with their weight. Overweight adults may try exercise programs, join gyms and participate in nutritional programs and still have trouble addressing weight issues. Attending a weight loss camp provides an extra level of support by removing temptations, offering services that address foundational issues associated with overeating, and helping individuals begin their fitness and nutrition journeys.

Locations

Weight loss camps in the United States generally cater to children and teenagers. Many of these camps have locations in California, Arizona and other traditional tourist destinations. In New York State, as of mid-2010, Shane Diet Resorts is the primary weight loss camp accommodating adults of all ages. In addition, Camp Wellspring accommodates women up to age 24, providing another option for younger adults. The other major camp in the northeast, Green Mountain in Vermont, is just a couple hours from New York and offers a female-oriented program focusing on diet, exercise and the foundational, emotional issues often associated with weight loss.

Benefits

Weight loss camps help individuals start losing weight, while also providing them with the tools they need to maintain weight loss momentum once they return home. Losing weight can help individuals reduce their risk of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. Weight reduction can help reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer–such as cancer of the gallbladder, cervix, breast and colon. Individuals can potentially eliminate sleep apnea by losing weight, while also reducing osteoarthritis. Gout and gallbladder disease can be aided by weight loss as well.

Activities

Visitors to weight loss resorts find a variety of outdoor and fitness activities in scheduled and free time. Activities include indoor cycling, swimming, yoga, Pilates, Zumba, aerobics, cross-training, kick-boxing, soccer, weight training and biking. Depending on the location, people may also go whitewater rafting, mountain biking and canoeing. On the diet side, individuals may take cooking classes to learn how to determine and prepare healthy meals or participate in nutrition seminars. At such resorts, visitors generally receive a customized weight loss plan and fitness program before heading home.

Amenities

Programs geared toward young adults–those through age 24–will likely resemble traditional summer camps or college dorm settings. Amenities will be similar to such facilities and will include bedrooms, showers, a dining area and recreation halls. Resorts geared toward adults in their late 20s and beyond frequently resemble health spas. At such locations, facials, massages or manicures are available. Individuals can take golf and tennis lessons and may have no-cost access to hot tubs and saunas. Depending on the program, visitors to spa-like resorts may find that dining facilities resemble restaurants rather than dining halls.

Cost

Programs such as those at Shane Diet Resort begin at $2,950 for two weeks with triple occupancy or $3,500 with double occupancy. These rates include food, exercise, and lodging but do not include taxes and gratuities. Camp Wellspring’s four-week tuition costs $6,490, or an average of $1622 a week. While several thousand dollars may feel like a lot of money, the costs of being overweight could be higher. According to Money Smart Life, overweight individuals spend more on health care, wardrobe and life insurance in addition to more on activities such as eating out. Overweight individuals also miss out on the endorphins associated with exercise and may have self-confidence issues, leading to potential psychological problems.
